Reading Quality Mark

Holy Family are delighted to achieve Gold Award in the Reading Quality Mark

At Holy Family School, we want to promote in all our children a real love of reading. During 2015-2016 our school participated in ‘Reading Quality Mark’. This culminates in an overall assessment of our promotion of, and provision for, reading. We were delighted that after a thorough and rigorous assessment, we were awarded the Gold Award!

Did You Know ?   According to research undertaken by the Institute of Education at University College London, reading for pleasure is more important for children’s cognitive development than their parents’ level of education. (2013: Dr. Alice Sullivan and Matt Brown)

During the year, we will continue to promote reading and there will be many events. We hope you will join in and support your child’s love of reading!

In order to attain an award schools are assessed across six themes, and whether they meet the criteria for bronze, silver or the gold award.

Key themes include:

  • Leadership and management
  • Workforce development
  • Reading promotion
  • Reading events and groups
  • School wide opportunities for reading for enjoyment
  • Family/community involvement/ public library service

This is an exciting project that we intend to continue to take full advantage of, in order to increase the achievements of our pupils.  “We are delighted to be supporting this initiative. Reading is incredibly important and encouraging children to enjoy literature helps develop a habit that lasts a lifetime.” Andy Parkinson from the National Literacy Trust
